Split Pea Soup

I'm gonna do it. I haven't made my homemade Split Pea soup since my "back to nature" days in the early 70's. I was living in Maine and trying to understand this macrobiotic diet I was on...not by choice...but by my husband's choice. But interestingly enough I learned to make the BEST split pea and lentil soup you have ever eaten...honest! You know how certain fragrances take you back to " a place "....or how certain things remind you of times in your life...sometimes you don't want to go there...does anyone understand what I'm saying? I just couldn't make split pea soup until now. But I am really excited about it. I will let you know how it turns out.

Karen,
Love your photo. Did you just add that? Are you a race car driver?

My grandmother used to make a split pea and ham soup that I LOVED but I haven't been able to replicate it. Moth Balls, now that's a smell that takes me back to her house...and when I open the vitamins I can picture my other grandmother's home. Hmmm, love the smell of gasoline and oil in the shed, that reminds me of their garage. We didn't have a garage growing up so for some reason that was a sacred mystery to me. Guess I should've blogged this instead. Don't think that I avoid things because of their smell. Josh couldn't listen to Jars of Clay for a while because it reminded him of our second miscarraige...does that count?

Oh yes, that counts. If you have ever gotten sick after eating something, it would take a while to try it again...even if being sick and eating that item were totally unrelated...or an album that was in my car during a very bad car accident smelled like gasoline for a very long time and that smell brought back memories of the accident. But GOOD SMELLS and tastes...also take you back to good places in your memories...like fresh baked bread always reminds me of my Aunt Louise's...and cigars remind me of my Grandpa Schumacher...and pipes of my Uncle Earl...and cut grass always takes me back to 509 Compton Road and playing in our big back yard. Certain colognes remind me of certain individuals...so yes...your examples count! After my Dad died, I kept one of his jackets. It had a leather collar and for years...honestly...years...I could smell that collar and smell my Dad. It helped me many times after he was gone. It smells like Jason now.

.... If the truth be told, the pic was taken on Xmas morning after Jimmy opened his new snowboard and related gear. I think I look totally cool!!!.......

I logged on to your blog to tell you that of course I would have loved to say "hello" to you up at church! I would know you anywhere--anytime I'm at the airport (not often) I always look for you. Anyway, I logged on to say, hello, but after reading about your homemade pea soup, I'm hungry! And thanks for always being so encouraging about the adoption thing!

Yes. I shook TY's hand. He was standing at the ticket counter and I just screamed...Look, It's Ty Pennington...and then I walked over and stuck out my hand. He is really really cute in person.
Yes, my Dad made the best Bean soups. He was an amazing cook for a while....except for the raw smoked chicken. YIKES
